The Results Are In

Ok, so when someone tells you she's on a diet you automatically think about the physical results...she's thinner, more trim, different clothes...but what we don't often think about is the health benefits on changing your diet.  As I have discussed before, I feel great.  I feel normal (my normal) again.  Sure, I have days when I'm tired or craving salty foods and sweet foods and peanut buttery foods...I'm human!  But for the most part, I no longer feel controlled by my weight or by food.  When I'm hungry, I eat and make smart choices.  And then I don't feel hungry anymore.

But aside from feeling good and looking better...there are those silent killers...the big round numbers that were flashing red in my face for 7 years as they just kept getting higher and higher no matter what I did to lower them...doctors kept saying "diet and exercise, exercise and diet" and each visit I was creeping up higher on the scale and with every blood test my cholesterol would jump another 20 points.

I had blood work done at a health fair in November that tested my cholesterol and triglycerides and blood work done in January that tested sugar and other things just before starting my diet.  For all I know, the November numbers were even higher in January because at least in November I had been working out for 6 months straight...then I stopped.

So this morning, at 7:30am, when I got the email from LabCorp saying that my results were in, my heart began to race...I hoped for cholesterol between 200-220--after all it has only been 3 months...and triglycerides...I was hoping for around 150...after all it took 7 years and I couldn't lower those numbers!

I opened the file...I scrolled...up and down...eyebrows furrowed...confused...wait, what?

Ladies and Gentlemen...I present to you my numbers...

Total Cholesterol:  from 272 to 180  (That's almost 100 points in 3 months!)
LDL: 105  (a little high but much lower than before)
HDL:  54  (above average--but it has always been around 50-60)
LDL/HDL ratio:  1.9  (it's never been that good)
Triglycerides:  From 262 to 105  (yea, I know, right?!)
Sugar: 100 to 92

And here's another one...my vitamin d that had been below normal for 3 years no matter how many supplements I was taking...I didn't change anything and my vitamin D is 43.  That is almost 20 points!

So as you might imagine, I am very, very pleased.

Now, I just need to lose the last 15-20lbs, start working out and lock in all this awesomeness and I will be good to go for another 50-60 years.  hehehe.

I don't know what I am more excited about--fitting into my old jeans or my blood work results.  I think the blood work results make it a little more real for me...I still see the girl I saw in January in the mirror...I know I look thinner but I don't see a dramatic difference the way others describe it.

I think I'm going to go outside and soak up more Vitamin D.

Happy Weekend!!
